Athi River Township Ward Member of County Assembly Michael Mutua has warned students from Machakos County to be wary of fake money to avoid losing school fee to conmen and women in the region.
Addressing students of Sunrise Teachers College in Athi River town on Saturday, Mutua said that a number of students had reportedly lost school fee to conmen and women.
Mutua said that students, most of whom lost their money at MPESA shop agents within the town were unable to differentiate between real and fake notes.
"The conmen and women take advantage of students inability to differentiate between fake and genuine notes, thereby issuing them with fake ones whenever they went to withdraw," alleged Mutua.
He said that the act was a big challenge given that it was exposing the victims to lots of problems because they were unable to pay for their fee among other personal needs.
The MCA said it was not easy to bring to book the perpetrators saying that it was not easy to get evidences and exhibits that the complainants had actually been issued with fake currencies.
He therefore advised all students from the region to be careful and wary of the scum which according to him was rampant among some of the MPESA dealers in the region.
