Kenyatta University Students Association (KUSA) has denied allegations that elections of the students’ union new officials were the primary cause of the unrest on Thursday last week.
KUSA newly elected chair Wycliff Kipsang claims that those who lost in the elections took advantage of the ongoing lecturer’s strike to incite students unrest forcing the management to close the university indefinitely.
Kipsang who has called on education cabinet secretary Fred Matiang'i to address lecturers' strike has called on the aggrieved factions for a consultative meeting to address contentious issues.
This comes as Technical University of Mombasa follows suit in closing its doors indefinitely following the lecturers strike.
A handful of students have been left packing at the institution’s compound as the majority had left earlier in the morning after the management issued the closure notice.
Last week, a first-year student at Kenyatta University lost her life following the chaos that erupted after students went on the rampage.
Two rival factions are said to have disagreed during the election of officials to KUSA.
In the ensuing melee, she was reportedly hacked to death by boda-boda riders who usually ply their trade outside the institution.
The management has shut the institution indefinitely and ordered all students to vacate the university premises.
