School leavers in Kisumu have been urged to apply for medical courses to boost health personnel numbers in the county.
Kisumu Medical Training College and Lake Victoria Medical Training College Principals Alloys Musuya and David Okach respectively said the health sector needs more personnel.
Mr Musuya said there is need to train health professionals towards the realisation of vision 2030.
He said the two medical colleges in the lake side city have capacity for to admit over 1,500 students to train in different medical fields.
Musuya spoke on Wednesday in Kisumu as they organised an open day on Thursday at Kenyatta Sports Ground to interact with the public to offer information on crucial issues that aid decision making towards desired career paths.
“This is a forum where High School students, stakeholders and the general public can access information on training opportunities at the Medical Training Colleges,” he said.
His counterpart Okach said there is shortage of medical staff in the government and private sector.
He said there are abundant jobs in the health sector and urged school leavers to join medical schools for training.
“We are helping young people with information so that they can be able to pursue medical courses of their choice,” he said.
They said the two institutions have expansion space to cover more courses like nutrition and medical engineering.
Mr Okach urged the county government to propose other health courses to meet the emerging needs in the county.
They hailed the county government for seconding staff to the two institutions to ridge the shortage.
They appealed for more financial assistance to put up infrastructure that can accommodate more students.
