Noor was talking to a section of residents yesterday at Mauche market centre. The residents were demonstrating against the promotion of the area Chief Rachael Cherono whom they accused of corruption.

The commissioner, who earlier had intervened to save the new chief from the wrath of angry youth, said that law must be followed in all situations. Cherono was promoted from a sub-chief to a chief.

He warned that the government would not take lightly cases of lawlessness where some residents had taken to taking law into their own hands.

Noor told the residents to report any corruption cases against government officers to his office for investigations but not to take the law into their own hands.

“There should be law and order. If any government officer is investigated and found guilty of corruption, or any other crime, action will be taken but let us not justify crime with crime,” he said.

The locals accuse the new chief of being behind many land scandals in the area and should not hold a public office.

Administrative police officers accompanying the commissioner arrested several youth who had broken into the chief’s office and forced her out while destroying documents and property at the premises.

Barely a week ago, rowdy youth in the area who were against the ‘pesa mashinani’ referendum bid signatures drive caused mayhem after they disrupted the rally and burnt several signature booklets.
