Elderly residents from Subukia sub-county have complained that they have not been able to receive stipends from the government for the last four months.
Speaking on Thursday at Subukia Trading Centre, the elders said that life has been unbearable due to harsh economic conditions.
They blamed those involved in the disbursement of the funds and urged them to be concerned with their interests.
“We are suffering, terribly suffering due to the delayed money, our hope hinges on the government as most of us have been neglected by our children,” said 87-year-old Kamau Ngotho.
The Elderly also claimed that the cash transfer programme has been hit by corruption where undeserving people are benefiting from it.
Moses Ndirangu 91, raised alarm on the high number of unscrupulous people benefiting from the elderly pool.
“The programme was meant to benefit elderly but it has gone beyond its objective where undeserving people are benefiting and denying us the share,” said Ndirangu.
The elderly urged the Ministry of Social services, gender and youth to develop a strategy plan to guide the disbursement of the funds to enable only those deserving benefit from it.
The social welfare protection programme for elderly is a state-run -initiative meant to support elderly people from extreme poverty and is run all over the country.
