Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWD) in Subukia sub-county have urged the government to increase the allocation set for persons with disabilities to improve their livelihood . The Chairman of Weseges Persons Living With Disabilities Joshua Kiarie said that more allocation would improve their living standards and enable them undertake income-generating projects. "Persons Living With Disabilities should be given more funds that will cater for their needs and improve their living standards,"said Kiarie. Speaking today at Weseges shopping Center, Weseges Ward Kiarie urged the national government and devolved governments to give more interests to Persons Living With Disabilities. It reiterates his position during the gubenatorial elections. "The allocation set by both governments is hardly enough to cater for our needs," said Kiarie. He added "we need more resources to improve our conditions." Kiarie said that more is needed to improve the status of persons living with disabilities. "Persons living with disabilities have right to education and health care", said Kiarie. He also urged NGOs to support them by providing them with assistive devices. "We call NGOs like Lions Club to support the disabled with financial grants and devices to lessen the suffering of our members," said Kiarie. He further implored government to exempt people living with disabilities from some taxes to enhance their capacity for self-reliance. "The government should consider exempting certain taxes like VAT to disabled as one way of rising our moral to participate in the growth of the nation," stated Kiarie. Kiarie however called on the persons living with disabilities to seek employment and break the dependency on government in order to fully meet their needs. "Persons living with disabilities should beak the myth that disability is not inability and do more to support themselves," said Kiarie. During the election , Rose Njau was elected vice chairlady, Lydia Nyaga as treasurer and Maxwell Ndungu as secretary.
