Cotu deputy secretary general Benson Okwaro said importation of sugar from other countries will kill local industries in the country.

According to the Star, Okwaro also called on the government to work on stopping the intake of illegal sugar into the market.

"The country's retail shops, including supermarkets are now selling imported sugar. There is little access to local sugar in these shops. If this continues, then all industries may end up shut and many people rendered jobless," Okwaro said as quoted by the Star.

He also accused certain individual well connected to the government as being the ones initiating the import of sugar from other countries.

The unionist said the sale of imported sugar should be stopped and that more people should be employed in the local industries in order to increase productivity.

This comes at a time when Mumias Sugar Company has failed to fully recuperate from the losses it has made over time.
