Sugar production dropped in February by 16 per cent in February compared with last year due to cane shortage.A report for the month indicates that production fell from 126,362 tons to 104,907 tons in the period under review. “In the period January- February 2017, the sugar industry reported a decrease of 16 per cent in production to attain 104,907 tons compared with 124,362 tons achieved in the same period last year,” says the report.According to the directorate, total sugar sales in January - February 2017 were 104,893 tons compared to 112,820 tons sold in the same period 2016.Sugar stocks at the factory dropped by 28 per cent a week ago prompting retailers to ration to their customers even as major brands of the commodity in supermarkets.
