A man was on Wednesday arraigned in court to answer to the charges of theft amounting to Sh28,073,336 at Tumaini Supermarket in Kisumu.
Archers Makato Nzeki was brought to court on three counts of theft.
The particulars of the offense were that on dates between November 2014 and November 30, 2015, Mr Makato jointly with the others already before court stole cash amounting to Sh28,073,336 from Tumaini Supermarket in Kondele, Kisumu.
Mr Makato who was an employee of Tumaini Self Service Limited at the time of the theft has been charged for stealing Sh1,908,066 in the first count of the offense which happened between November 30, 2014 and September 1, 2015.
According to the charge sheet before court, Mr Makato also stole Sh8,819,435 between September 2 and November 29, 2015. In the third count he is accused of neglect to prevent felony of the theft of Sh17,347,835.
In the charge, the prosecution told the court the accused by virtue of being an employee of the Tumaini Self Service Limited failed to use all reasonable means to prevent the theft of Sh17,347,835 which was planned by till operators at the supermarket branch in Kondele area.
The accused who appeared before the Senior Principle Magistrate Thomas Obutu pleaded not guilty to all the three counts of charges and was released on a bond of Sh500,000 with similar surety and a cash bail of Sh100,000 or otherwise be remanded at the Kisumu Main Prison.
Judge Obutu also directed that the accused be supplied with the copies of witness statements and any other document that the prosecution intends to rely upon at the accused own cost.
He case will be mentioned on April 24 pending the hearing of the case on May 30.
