Stephen Karanja was arrested by Nakuru County Public Health officers after a customer who had reportedly bought stale chicken from the supermarket on Thursday tipped them off.

According to County Head of Public Health Samuel King'ori, the officers were able to confiscate 27 packs of stale chicken which had been lined up for sale.

"The customer came with the packed chicken and told us he had bought it at Naivas Supermarket and on scrutinising it carefully, we found that the meat had indeed gone bad,” said King'ori.

King'ori said that they had decided to take immediate action considering that it is a holiday weekend and many would be shopping for delicacies.

"The meat we found had even changed colour to yellow and there is no way we could have kept quiet and risk people's lives,” he said.

The county official however reported that the manager had refused to reveal to them the name of their supplier.

Other supermarket officials could not be reached for comment.
