Kisii County may end up losing millions of money in terms of revenue as well as a majority of the locals lose jobs if the County Governor signs laws that will compel all local supermarkets to provide carrier bags to their shoppers.
According to the Kisii supermarket owners, the move by members of the Kisii County assembly to pass a motion to compel them to give free carries bags to their customers is unacceptable as they are currently undergoing tough times in terms of profitability hence that won’t be sustainable.
Addressing a press conference at a Kisii Hotel the owners led by Shivling supermarkets chairperson Adrian Shivling the supermarket owners said they fear on how they will sustain their business considering the fact the shopping bags are currently costly.
“The smallest shopping bag currently goes at sh 30 and perhaps that’s the profit we are aiming at from each shopper hence that means if the County pushes us to give free carriers we will have no option but quit the region,” said Shivling
The owners pleaded with area Governor to dismiss the bill as that risks him from losing great investors who are committed to ensuring that his dream to make Kisii town has a 24 hours economy.
The motion was sponsored by Bomorenda ward MCA Ombati who said the supermarkets in town should provide free carries
