Uasin Gishu National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) County Director of Environment Boniface Birichi has put on notice supermarkets and shops still using plastic bags.
He said those who will be found will be arrested and charged for breaking the law.
“It’s sad despite us banning the use of plastic bags there are some shops and supermarkets still packaging their goods in them. I want to give a stern warning to such individuals. They will be arrested and charged and fined heavily,” he said in Eldoret town, Thursday.
“Our aim is to keep our environment clean since plastic bags have more harm than good to our environment,” he added.
He called upon Uasin Gishu residents to use alternative bags such as the manila paper, canvas, jute and biodegradable plastic.
“We will soon start our crackdown and no one will be spared that those using and packaging their goods in plastics bags,” noted Birichi.
He also warned passengers against throwing litter from a vehicle window saying they will be fined sh 5,000.
