The law making it compulsory for retailers and supermarkets to provide customers with alternative bags after doing their shopping will be effective come January 2018.
The leader of majority Uasin Gishu County assembly Josephat Lowoi said residents will not have to pay for the alternative bags anymore.
“Last month we passed a motion that will force all retailers and supermarkets to give alternative bags to their customers free of charge because we are not happy with how customers are being exploited,” he said in Eldoret town, Saturday.
“The motion was submitted to governor Jackson Mandago and we expect him to assent and make it a law come January," added Lowoi.
He, however, urged matatu drivers to drive carefully and avoid over speeding during this festive season and should always put in mind that they are carrying people and not a vegetable.
“Let's drive carefully and avoid drinking while driving anyway just want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and happy new year and let us remember to share with the less fortunate in the society,” noted Lowoi.
