Led by the SUPKEM Garissa branch Secretary Abdullahi Salat, the religious leaders urged politicians to take control of their supporters during this time when party primaries are being conducted across the counties.

"Political aspirants should restrain their supporters during their campaigns and rallies. The ugly incident between Duale and Maalim supporters should never happen again. Not anywhere within the county," said Salat.

Salat's statement follows an incident where the supporters of Majority leader Aden Duale shouted insults to their rivals in Maalim's camp who then retaliated, leading to a clash in Garissa Town.

A number of supporters from both camps were injured in the melee where police were forced to shoot several times in the air to disperse the rowdy political backers.

Maalim and Duale are on record criticizing and downplaying each other, a fact that has aggravated the supremacy battle especially during the politicking season.
