The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims has finally set a date for its election for the first time after 16 years.
Executive officer Yusuf Murabwa said SUPKEM will have its annual general meeting on October 16 and therefore intend to hold its elections then.
Over time, current SUPKEM leaders have been accused of continually frustrating attempts to get new office bearers.
The meeting will see 176 leaders from all the 26 regions in the country converge in Nairobi to elect their leaders.
The announcement opens the race between peace and conflict consultant Hassan Ole Mahat and ambassador Mohammed Adan Mahat, a diplomat at the foreign affairs ministry. The former is the organization’s deputy secretary general.
Mahat is being fronted by the youth because of his work in the National Youth Forum and constitutional implementation. Adan who heads the Jubilee campaigns in Mandera County is in turn enjoying the support of former leaders who have chosen not to defend their seats.
