The market was razed down after Jubilee’s point man Ali Korane was declared the winner of the August general elections. Korane floored the outgoing Governor Nathif Jama in one of the most watched races at the county level.
The incident took place on Thursday following the announced the election results, which Jama has termed as unfair and not reflecting the will of the people.
The clerics, led by Abdisalan Mohamed, said that it is in order for the government to compensate the affected persons because the market was a source of livelihood to many of them.
“We are saddened by the burning of Garissa market and we condemn acts of hooliganism. We urge the police to thoroughly hasten their investigations and bring the perpetrators to book,” Mohamed said, as quoted by Star.
He asked the government and well-wishers to hear the plight of the victims in order to come to their rescue as soon as possible.
“The majority of those who lost their property have no means of recovering. The government and well-wishers should come in handy.”
His remarks were backed by county Mandeleo ya Wanawake chairperson Qureisha Mohamed who condemned the incident and asked government to intervene into the matter. She also urged residents of Garissa to maintain peace.
