[Photo|the-star]Garissa SUPKEM Secretary General Abdullahi Salat has urged newly elected MPs to lead by example and champion proper legislation.Speaking to journalists in Garissa on Thursday, Salat said that MPs are the face of the country’s legislation, stating that they have a duty to conduct themselves in a respectable manner that upholds the dignity of the office they hold.He also urged MPs to focus on their work and formulate laws that will better the living standards of Kenyans.Salat said some the previous Parliament failed to pass key legislation like the two-thirds gender Bill which is crucial in public appointments. “Our message to the newly elected MPs who have taken oath of office is for them to focus on service delivery and serve Kenyans diligently,” he said quoted by the Standard.At the same time, the SUPKEM official urged the newly elected MPs to shelve calls for pay hike urging them to instead focus on their work.He asked the MPs, senators and other state officials to accept the pay that has been recommended for them by the salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).Newly elected and nominated MPs, senators and woman representatives were sworn into office on Thursday.A Section of the MPs have raised concerns over their slashed pay, saying that it will not be enough to facilitate their work as lawmakers.
