The county government of Nyamira should support academic clinics organised by various schools across the county to support ‘slow learners', an official has said.

Peter Nyamamba from Sironga Girls High School who coordinates the exercise on Friday urged the county government to chip in and help his ‘Academic Freedom Movement’ stretch the exercise to all schools across the county with primary schools inclusive.

According to him, the exercise has been benefiting students from established high schools from Nyamira during the holidays with its impact evident in national exams results.

“All learners cannot be the same. We have those who are fast learners and those who are slow. If we expand the academic clinic that targets slow learners we will definitely see great results in national exams. We have tried it with some schools and the impact has been prolific,” he said at Riosiago Secondary School.

Mr Nyamamba said academic excellence of the county should be given first priority by the county government through the exercise.

“The county government has a role to play. We are ranked on the basis of county and the issue that education is not a devolved function should not arise at all. As part of the team that conducts the exercise, it's time for the county government to help the candidates pay for the services for better results,” he added.

He said regular time stipulated by the Ministry of Education was not enough to help slow learners perform in national exams.

“The eight hours given by the government are not enough to help the slow learners. But through the academic clinics, we can be able to make steps during holidays,” he added.

The academic clinic which attracts students from different schools has been held in Sironga and Kebabe High Schools for the period of five years.
