Speaking from Athi River town, the World Provision Centre's Director Rev. Simon Kingi said that the clergy had better positions of interventions on the campaign against HIV.

Rev. Kingi said alongside pastoral work by the priests, they could take advantage of many of the congregation that floods their churches to offer Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) services packed with professional trainings.

The clergy who also runs a church in the town argued that it was not right to lead a sick society hence need to curb the virus which had hit communities in the region very hard.

He said many families had lost young parents in the area thereby living behind many orphans and vulnerable children who neither the society nor the government could take good care of.

“My organisation has launched several moon light VCT programmes in main towns along Nairobi Mombasa Road with commercial sex workers as the main targeted group,” said Rev. Kingi.

He added the sex workers who were in well organised groups were helping the organisation mobilise their colleagues in the trade, their clients such as heavy commercial drivers among others who colluded with them in the trade to visit the organisation.

The clergy called on other organisations implementing HIV services to also put into consideration commercial sex workers in their programs to help reduce the prevalence of HIV in the region.
