Sleep experts have always recommended that one should sleep for at least seven hours a day. As it turns out, sleeping for fewer hours is as dangerous as sleeping for too long.

Sleep experts advise that the maximum number of hours one should sleep should be nine hours. Those who sleep for over nine hours can thus be termed as over sleepers and sleeping too much has its own side effects.

Some of the side effects of sleeping for too long include;

Risk of diabetes

Researchers have established a link between diabetes and sleeping too much. The argument is that people who sleep for over nine hours have fewer hours to be active thus increasing the risk of diabetes. This is because being inactive for long has a close relationship with obesity which in return leads to diabetes.

Stroke

A study by the University of Cambridge conducted for over 11 years reported that people who slept for more than eight hours were at a higher risk(46%) of getting a stroke. Also, increased sleeping hours could be an early sign of stroke.

Memory

Research has proven that sleeping for too long has a negative impact on your memory. According to a research by Havard, women who slept for more than nine hours developed poor cognition compared to the consistent sleepers. The memory of those who overslept was also two years older compared to those who slept for seven to eight hours a day.

Poor mental health

Studies have it that too much sleep could lead to distress thus affecting your mental health. This happens when one sleeps for too long only to wake up feeling disoriented and confused instead of waking up feeling refreshed.

Always ensure that you only sleep enough to avoid suffering from the side effects of either oversleeping or lack of enough sleep.
