A social survey project by an international Non Governmental Organisation seeks to establish the level of drug and alcohol abuse among the youths in Nakuru. The survey will be carried out by Better Future for Needy International (BEFUNI) in collaboration with the National Campaign Against Drug Abuse (Nacada). According to the project manager Paul Mwai, it will help establish the root causes of drug abuse in the country as well as finding out the kinds and nature of substances abused among youths. Mwai who talked to this writer during a data collection exercise at Teachers estate said that the survey will sample out Nakuru County as a case study to represent both rural and urban environments in Kenya. “This exercise is part of Better Future for Needy International objectives that seek to establish socio-economic development stumbling blocks among people in developing nations of the world. Social surveys like this one can help establish the predisposing factors for lack of innovative development among needy people like the youth,’’ said Mwai. He observed that the study will also help establish raw data and information for use and interpretation by other stake holders like Nacada and other government agencies and NGOs. Mwai clarified that the problem of alcohol and drug abuse has been classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a major threat to health and wellness among young people across the world.
