As I was looking for a book for a quick read this morning, I stumbled upon one from the famous Dummy Series. This series of books has the signature yellow and black look. Their chief goal is to transform any complex topic into an easily understandable one.

The authors use experiences and simple ways to explain the hardest of matters….even old Windows XP!

It is such a book that is needed here in Kenya…to explain it all!

Kenyan politics happens to be a very complex matter. It evolves daily. There needs to be a survival manual for the unseasoned Kenyan citizen or visiting tourist.

Sometimes there is no logic or reason to the things happening in this country. An outsider can consider us as being lunatics while in reality, we are quite normal from our own point of view.

It is said a madman amongst madmen is considered normal…this is an analogy. Please do not crucify me.

So, how do you survive Kenyan politics?

For starters, it is essential to have a sense of humor. Much of what will happen will cause some jitters and fear. But if you are able to laugh it off, you will sleep better at night.

A second thing would be to avoid die hard supporters from both camps. While in their presence, make sure you watch your words wisely. Listen to them. Nod your head and make agreeable sounds to make the speaker assume you are listening. Make sad looking faces when they are criticizing a politician or an opposing political party.

A third thing to keep an eye on, is social media and local TV and radio stations. They will give you the juiciest political gossip and news about the streets to avoid during IEBC demonstrations. It also helps to have good running shoes and pants/trousers whenever you visit the Central Business District during these times. Phones, wallets and handbags should be held on like precious metals discovered in war zone.

It will also help if you can sing and dance to the various songs and chants that have been made popular during these trying times. You might not like the beat, but survival tactics are necessary. And wiggling your behind is one of them.

Last but not least, do not take this author seriously. Have a good day everyone!
