A suspected conman yesterday narrowly escaped being lynched as he ran into the hands of administration police officers guarding the Thika sub-county offices who saved him from the ire of an irate mob that was baying for his blood.
The man was in a group of three men who had conned a businessman at the Thika main bus park of goods worth over Sh53,000 but his attempts to escape were thwarted by bodaboda operators who pursued him and caught up with him as he tried to board a Nairobi bound Matatu.
The businessman, Peter Njuguna 55, said that he was approached by three men who purchased gunny bags and ropes worth over Sh53,000 telling him that the goods are to be transported to Mombasa as they had discovered a quick market.
One of the clients John Njoroge engaged him for a while as the rest ferried the goods to a waiting bus, the victim sensed that the client was not planning to pay for the goods when he kept taking him from one M-pesa shop to the other and finally he attempted to flee.
Njuguna raised the alarm attracting the attention of the boda-boda operators who gave chase and caught up with the fleeing conman at the terminus when he was just about to board a Matatu.
On interrogation the man was found to be from Nyandarua County and is believed to be part of a cartel that has been conning unsuspecting businessmen of their goods.
Deputy DAPC, Dismus Kimathi said that they were going to hand over the case to the District Criminal Investigations (CID) officers.
