The villagers were armed with crude weapons and accused him of being behind a string of criminal incidences in the area.

According to Njoro police boss Patrick Lai, the former inmate identified as Godfrey Waweru was saved from the angry villagers when he ran and took refuge at the police station on the outskirts of the village.

He said police locked the suspect in cell for his safety and went to investigate the matter. After they investigated the issue they released him.

According to Lai, residents of the area claimed that the former inmate had masterminded several robbery and minor incidences in the village since his release from prison a month ago.

The former convict had been in jail for two years on theft charges in a case in which he and others plotted to steal Sh50,000 from a local tourist hotel in Elburgon town where he had worked as a waiter.

“We did not find any reasonable grounds of detaining the suspect since the claims by the residents cannot be proved. We have however counseled the former convict against involving himself in crime and advised him to shift from the estate,” said Lai.

The police also advised the residents against taking the law into their own hands by subjecting suspects to mob justice and lynching.
