Residents of Mandera have been gripped with fear after suspected Al Shabaab militants hijacked two vehicles ferrying voters to polling station.
The cars were hijacked between Omar Jillo and Lafey in Mandera on Tuesday while ferrying voters to take part in the voting exercise.
Confirming the incident, North Eastern regional commissioner Mohamud Saleh has said that the suspected militia hijacked a land cruiser and probox vehicles following the attack.
Saleh also said that no one was injured following the incident that took place at around 6. a.m.
He further said that the suspected terrorists were only interested in the cars and not hurting anyone after the hijacking incident as the nation looks forward to electing new leaders.
One of the hijacked vehicles allegedly had a South Sudan number plate before the attack took place.
“They were only interested in the vehicles. Reports that they also hijacked a bus full of voters are not true. Kenyans, especially those on social media, should stop posting untrue information because they may end up causing a lot of tension," he said as reported by the Star.
The official assured the residents that everything is under control, adding that there is no need to panic.
