A man who has allegedly been conning Kisii town residents was on Friday cornered after his tactics backfired when he tried to solicit money from motorbike operators on grounds that he was a reinforcement officer from the county government.

According to the victim, Kenneth Mokua, the accused had offered to give him a receipt of Sh200 per month as opposed to Sh600 that is remitted to the Kisii County government on a monthly basis, with an additional Sh200 for the services offered.

Mokua, who had been tipped previously by his colleagues’ boda boda riders, beat the accused before the police arrived.

“He has been notorious for almost a month now but no step has been taken by the county government despite reporting the incident. I realised that he was the same man we have been looking for because he has managed to con many of my colleagues by giving counterfeit receipts,” he said.

Kisii OCS John Wamotho confirmed the incident and said the accused, later identified as Leonard Sagini, was receiving treatment at Kisii referral hospital but was in police custody waiting to be charged upon release from the health facility.

“I laud the boda boda family for helping us to apprehend the culprit but I wish to warn them against beating people involved in such incidents. He is currently in Kisii hospital receiving treatment following the injuries he sustained. We will charge him upon release,” he said.
