Police in Njoro sub-county have arrested a man suspected to be running an illegal donkey slaughterhouse.
According to Njoro police boss Patrick Lai, Nicholas Mbuthia was arrested on Wednesday at Kikapu village after members of the public informed police that he operates a donkey slaughterhouse at his home secretly.
Lai said that when police officers raided the home, they found three donkeys grazing in the compound and discovered blood stains and several sharp weapons at a backyard of his house where the suspect used to slaughter the animals from.
Lai said, "We were tipped off by wananchi that a man is operating a donkey slaughterhouse. They led us to the home of the suspect and we found three donkeys in the compound.”
He added, “We suspect that the animals were being targeted for slaughtering. We are interrogating him to unearth a donkey theft and meat supply syndicate in this area."
He said that the donkeys and equipment that were found in the suspect’s compound have been confiscated and will be used in court as evidence once police are through with investigations.
Lai also appealed to residents who could have lost their animals to go and identify them from the exhibits at the police station.
