Two suspected members of a criminal gang on Wednesday narrowly escaped being beaten to death by an irate mob that was baying for their blood.The two who were in a group of five men had attacked a woman and robbed her in Likoni, Mombasa County.The five gang members who were armed with machetes and other crude weapons demanded money from the woman and also robbed her of her cellphone.
Area DCI boss Henry Ndombi who confirmed the incident said the suspects are nursing serious injuries after they were attacked by an angry mob when they were attempting to escape.
The DCI boss said the woman was taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated and later discharged.
Ndombi said the officers were notified of the incident by members of the public and when police were deployed to the scene, they found the angry crowd had already taken the law into their own hands.
According to Mr Ndombi, police officers were forced to shoot in the air to disperse the angry crowd.
“The suspects who sustained serious injuries were rushed to Coast General hospital for treatment. The victim was also treated for minor injuries before she recorded the statement with police. Investigations into the incident are ongoing,” said Mr Ndombi.
