Residents of Riamoni location in Nyamira have called upon the police to arrest a young woman who allegedly tried to kidnap a child from a house on Tuesday morning.
The mother, Ms Peris Mokeira, said she found the suspected kidnapper ready to commit a crime before she ran away.
Ms Mokeira said she called for help from neighbours, who arrived after the suspect had vanished.
“I was busy preparing breakfast in the kitchen and my child was resting outside the house. I was shocked to see a young woman trying to carry my baby and on seeing me, she ran away to a nearby bush just near my home,” she said.
“I called for help but neighbours came late because most of them had gone to work. We really wanted the lady apprehended to answer the increasing complaints of child kidnapping not only in this area but also the surrounding neighbourhood,” she added.
Area chief Francis Rasugu confirmed the incident and asked residents to be vigilant and assist the authorities to apprehend the suspected kidnapper in a bid to avert future cases of child kidnapping.
“The mother has reported the incident to me but I want to call upon all residents to ensure they are vigilant enough and help the authorities to apprehend the woman. Cases of child kidnap are rising steadily and therefore, we have to find a lasting solution,” he said.
