An angry mob has stoned to death a 29-year-old man alleged to have stolen chicken in Makairo market of Bogichora location in Nyamira South sub-county.
Mr Barrack Omboga is said to have broken into the kitchen of Mr Edward Guto yesterday midnight and stole 30 hens.
According to an eyewitness, the deceased was cornered in Makairo market on Monday evening carrying the same hens which were positively identified by the owner. After raising an alarm, he was chased and on nabbing him, the irate members of the public stoned him to death.
“I heard a commotion within the market place and after following keenly, I heard they were chasing a thief, according to the words they uttered and took it as a normal happening since it’s a market day, little did I know it would lead to a death, his chasers caught him and immediately started to stone him until he was lifeless,” he said.
Confirming the incident, Nyamira police boss Mr Ngare Rico warned the members of the public against taking the law into their hands and instead report any offence to the relevant authorities to avoid such incidents of taking one’s life.
“One is innocent until proved guilty, members of the public should not be their own judges and I urge them to report to the relevant authorities of any criminal activities instead of doing mob injustice,” said the OCPD.
The police have launched investigations over the incident.
The body has been moved to Nyamira County referral hospital for post-mortem examinations.
