A suspected robber was on Saturday shot dead by police and his colleague set ablaze by area residents in Kabete.

He was killed after a fierce exchange with police officers as he made to hijack a matatu at Ndumbo-ini trading centre.

"We recovered a pistol he was using with bullets. He shot at our officers but was overpowered," said area OCPD Joseph Ongaya.

Witnesses said that the two were riding their motorbike on the wrong lane in the hurry of their mission.

They then collided with a Probox vehicle and a loaded pistol slipped from them.

The suspect quickly picked the pistol and shot twice in the air to scare officers before hijacking a PSV filled with passengers.

Passengers waiting to board the matatu fled the place following a confrontation.

"When some people suspected the other one who was left was not armed, he was arrested by members of the public who started interrogating him," Ongaya said as quoted by the Star.

"Within no time, old tires were brought and tied around his body, petrol was poured on him and he was set ablaze."

The bodies were then taken to City Mortuary.
