Police in Kisauni, Mombasa, have shot dead a suspected robber who allegedly stole from a businessman in the area.
Confirming the incident, Kisauni Deputy OCPD Walter Abondo, said the suspect was among a gang of three who carried out the robbery in Bayusuf area, Kisauni.
According to Mr Abondo, the suspect was shot dead as he and three other gangsters were robbing the businessman who is a cigarette distributor identified as Mr Sifa Kahindi Charo.
The police chief said the gangsters blocked Mr Charo from passing and attacked him before they were confronted by officers on patrol.
“Police on patrol responded quickly when the robbers attacked the businessman. One of the gang members was shot dead by the officers when they attempted to escape,” said Abondo.
He added: “The suspects had robbed the businessman of Sh70, 000 when police who were patrolling the area intervened. The robbers then drew machetes ready to attack the police in civilian.”
Mr Abondo said the rest of the gang members managed to escape, adding that the police are searching for them.
The police chief added that they recovered several machetes and knives as well as the stolen money from the suspect.
