A man aged 25 from Kiongincha village in Rioma Kisii County and who was arrested for allegedly stealing people’s property attempted to commit suicide at Rioma police station on Wednesday.
A police officer at Rioma police station identified as Robert Makau said that the suspect tried to stab himself using a bottle of a soda he was given to drink from.
"The suspect’s relatives came to pay him a visit at the police cell and bought a soda for him. The suspect grabbed the bottle broke it and stabbed himself in the stomach. The relatives rescued him rushed him to Kisii Teaching and Referral hospital where he is currently being treated,” said the officer.
The officer said this was the first case of attempted suicide to be reported at the police station cell, adding that the suspect will be arraigned in court once he recovers from the stab wounds.
“We will arraign him in court once he is released from hospital to be charged with attempted murder and theft,” he added.
A doctor attending to the suspect at the hospital only identified as Ondari on Thursday morning said the suspect is out of danger and he will be released from the hospital anytime from Friday.
Ondari urged police officers to be careful when handling suspects in police cells to avoid such incidents.
