Two middle-aged men suspected to be behind the torching of a fire engine belonging to Nakuru County government have been arrested.
The two were arrested by police during an intensified crackdown on the culprits.
The engine, valued at Sh40 million, was torched during the protests at Salgaa trading centre.
Early this morning, heavy security officers were deployed in the area following reported cases of resurfacing of chaos in what the residents termed as laxity by the county government to address the issue.
The two suspects were taken to Nakuru police station before taken to court as investigations are still ongoing. The police are also investigating the driver of the fire engine who is believed to have left the station without prior permission and proceeded to the scene where it was set ablaze.
However, following the incident, Nakuru County has benefited from two fire engines granted to them through partnership with the World Bank.
The leaders and community elders have continued to express abhorrence over the act, and instead called for amicable means of addressing problems in the area.
“There are many alternative means of airing grievances including dialogue and peaceful demonstrations. Torching vehicles and damaging property aggravates the situation instead of providing a solution. People should therefore use peace in addressing issues affecting them,” Nakuru elders association chairman Samuel Kimaigwa said.
