Two men facing 12 counts of murder in relation to the attack in Hindi, Lamu County have been acquitted of murder charges by a Mombasa Court.
Mr Swaleh Auni and Mr Joseph Chege were freed after Justice Martin Muya ruled that the prosecution had not been proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
In his ruling, Judge Muya said the prosecution failed to prove that the two were behind the killings, despite relying on the evidence of a self-confessed murder who the judge said was compromised by the police.
The court had heard that the offences were committed on the nights of July 5 and 6, 2014, in Hindu, Lamu County.
The two were charged with allegedly murdering Mzee Enock, Kombe Kiti, Enock Sila, Kenga Ngoma, Justin Chege, Abednego Kyalo, Raphael Muigai, Ken Mngara, Stephen Gichubi, Lawrence Kingori, John Karisa and Goyo Kenga.
The two through their lawyer had argued that none of the prosecution witnesses had placed them at the scene of the attacks.
