The suspended students in Kisii University have demanded that the suspension letters received be nullified
According to them, the University failed to follow due procedures laid out in taking disciplinary actions against students.
Speaking to journalist on Tuesday at the university. Students led by Mr Maxwell Ambiro appealed to the university to nullify the letters and give room for them to defend themselves before the senate committee before action is taken.
“Does it implies suspension is the harshest disciplinary actions a university can give, so what other pending disciplinary actions are they talking about?” posed Mr Maxwell Ambiro, one of the suspended students.
The varsity has suspended 40 of its students, in connection with the unrest that occurred three weeks ago leading to its closure, without a hearing.
“The university should have first waited for us to get back to school on Wednesday before issuing us the suspension letters. We received text messages via our mobile phones to come pick up our letters while at home,” he added.
The third year student said according to the disciplinary rules, suspected students should be called before the senate committee, given a hearing before any disciplinary action is taken.
“The Senate should have first given us a hearing before taking any step. It’s like they have already decided we are guilty,” added Ombiro.
50 percent of the student population in the university comes from Kisii, the students are questioning how no student from the community has been suspended.
The group has also questioned the university management on the criteria used to suspend them considering none of them was among the students caught by the police during the strike.
The institution has even suspended a female student who was on long holiday and has not been in Kisii for the last one and half months, they said,
The students are also questioning why none of the 37 students arraigned in court were among those that were suspended.
