The Chief Executive Officer of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Francis Menja has reiterated his warning to the matatu sector on observation of safety rules and regulations.
Menja, who was speaking to journalists in Thika Town on Tuesday after a matatu owners' and other stakeholders' meeting, said that the suspension of errant Saccos' licences is still in force.
This is for Saccos whose individual member matatus are involved in tragic accident(s), killing people and committing other traffic offences.
“We are doing this so that Saccos can ensure that their drivers, conductors and others observe the regulations we have put in place,” said Menja.
He observed that statistics have shown that many deaths in Kenyan roads are as a result of over speeding.
“We are very much strict on PSVs which are caught over speeding more than anything else because that is a major contributor of road accidents and deaths,” he said.
Menja asked the individual Saccos to come up with self-regulatory measures to discipline their staff who contravene traffic rules to avoid suspension of their licences.
