The Kiambu County Government has announced that a semi aerobi landfill waste management structure is set to put up at Kang'oki in Thika Constituency.

Kiambu Governor William Kabogo said that the waste management structure will be the first of a kind in Africa. "The waste management structure will cost Ksh 114 million and it will be partly funded by the Swedish Embassy. Others who will fund this project includes the county government of Kiambu, Ministry of Lands, UN Habitat and also Housing and Urban Development", Kabogo said.

Kabogo who was speaking yesterday during the ground  breaking ceremony which was heal at Kang'oki said that the structure will be modelled on the one in Japanes Fukuoka City.

"This structure is going to be constructed on a 20 acre piece of land and with time it will be extended inorder to cover 50 acresThere shall be some leachate collection pipes which will be laid at the bottom so that waste will be discharges as quick as possible", Kabogo said.

Prof Yazushi Matsufuji of Fukuoka University of Japan who was present during the ground breaking ceremony said that the introduction of the Fukuoka model of waste management in the African countries was going to help the countries when it comes to the maximasation of the land and hence proper management of the solid waste.

"This method of waste management has worked in all the countries in Asia", Matsufuji said. The director of UN Habitat Africa Axumite Gebre Egziabher went ahead and said that most cities in Africa are unable to manage their waste and hence hindering the growth and development.
