Traders operating within Kisii town have been asked to ensure electricity sources are switched off when not in use to avoid unnecessary fires.

Kisii County director for Special programs Mengo Ochwangi speaking on Friday evening when he comforted traders who lost millions of property through the fire at Daraja Mbili area, said fires caused by electricity can be prevented if the precaution measures are observed.

“We don’t want to lose property every time through fires. Traders should switch off electric sockets and other electrical appliances to avoid fires,” said Mengo.

Mengo added that the traders should avoid connecting electricity wires illegally.

“Electricity connection should only be done by qualified Kenya power workers. Some traders who have stolen electricity should be arrested and prosecuted because they are endangering lives,” he noted.

According to Mengo, fire that razed down shops at Jua Kali center is as a result of illegal electricity connections.
