Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has urged Kenyans to turn up in large numbers for the second phase of the mass voter registration exercise.
In a Facebook post on Monday, Joho said the move will give Kenyans a chance to participate in the August 8 elections and choose a government that represents their hopes and aspirations.
Joho called upon citizens to take full advantage of the ongoing exercise, warning that the future will deteriorate to unprecedented levels if the status quo remains.
“I therefore urge the residents to take their destiny into their own hands by acquiring their voters cards and ensuring that they are not left out in the IEBC registration exercise which ends on February14, 2017,” read the post in part.
“This time like never before we must ensure that fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, relatives, friends, neighbours and ourselves are registered as voters,” he added.
The outspoken governor said the moment to choose a government that is sensitive and responsive to plight of Kenyans, and one which will eliminate corruption, deal with historical injustices, social justice and respect to human rights is now.
“IEBC is targeting to register 200,000 in Mombasa County, but we are going to carry out an intensive voter registration campaign that will see us register over 300,000 voters,” he added.
The mass voter registration exercise kicked off on Monday Jan 16 and is expected to run until February 14.
