Counties in Northern Kenya might experience elevated temperatures due to a heat wave that is expected to hit the country.
County Director of Meteorological Services, Mr. Ramadhan Munga said Tana River county will experience water scarcity, heat waves, and sandstorms for the next one month.
Mr. Munga issued the warning of a possible heat wave in the region with temperatures rising between 30-40 degrees Celsius.
Garissa County will also be affected by the high temperatures in towns such as Bura, Hola and Garsen are likely to remain sunny and dry throughout the month.
The director said bursts of extreme heat will hit northern Kenya counties for the next one month and could trigger the weather condition that is expected to worsen drought and sandstorms in the region adding that the heat wave could result in potential health problems.
Mr. Munga said an assessment of rainfall performance during the month of December 2017 indicates that most parts of the county experienced depressed rainfall with most meteorological stations recording less than 75% of their monthly Long Term Means (LTMs).
“The sunny and dry weather conditions expected in the pastoral areas will worsen the drought situation in the county and lead to a further reduction in foliage and pastures for livestock,” he said as quoted by the Daily Nation.
“The December rainfall was poorly distributed, both in time and space with sunny and dry weather conditions dominating over most parts of the county,” added Mr. Munga.
