Tanzanian opposition party Chadema has said it will back president Uhuru Kenyatta in the August 8 elections.
In a message sent to the Jubilee top brass, Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Party for Democracy and Progress), which campaigns largely on an anti-corruption platform said Kenyatta is the rightful leader for Kenya at the moment.
Speaking at the party's council meeting at the weekend, chairman Freeman Mbowe said that though they had concluded that Kenyatta was the right candidate for the presidency and better choice for democracy in Kenya, they were dismayed by opposition leader Raila Odinga who supported John Magufuli during their last presidential campaigns.
“We supported Raila Odinga during the 2012 elections in Kenya but to our surprise, when it came to the 2015 polls in Tanzania, he supported the CCM candidate, Dr John Magufuli. Odinga is a traitor,’’ he said.
He commended Kenyatta for expanding the democratic space during his stint in office.
“Opposition leaders in Kenya haven’t been jailed,” he said.
