Business premises and educational institutions in Ruiru sub-county have been urged to comply with the fire safety directive released by Ruiru fire office.
The directive is meant to ensure that customers and students are safe while within their premises.
Officer in charge of the Ruiru fire rescue department, Francis Akanga, said that more than 300 notices have been issued with most of them being to educational institutions. The notices require the institutions to install all required equipment to fight fire in case it arises.
Akanga revealed that some institutions have complied with their notice and congratulated them. He, however, cautioned those who have not installed the safety equipment, saying they face a risk prosecution.
He said that equipment include fire extinguishers, fire blankets, fire alarms, fire exit labels and fire assembly points labels. He said that all schools should have metallic buckets full of sand, which acts as an instant option to deal with a fire risk.
Akanga also suggested that schoolchildren be taught first aid skills to help them eliminate panic in case one is injured in an accident. He said that the Red Cross and Scouting clubs and have proven to be of help to their fellow students in terms of first aid.
He said that prevention of fires is better and easier than putting out infernos. He said that the Ruiru fire department offers fire rescue drills to schools to enable them deal with fires to minimise injuries or destruction of property.
