Days after a school in Garissa County was indefinitely closed over student unrest, a teacher’s union has criticized the Education CS, Fred Matiang’i over his leadership style. The union said the whole issue is attributed to the minister's lack of commitment in the sector.
According to Akello Misori, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (Kuppet) secretary general, Matiang'i lacks a pro- active system to adequately and competently solve the persistent problems in schools.
‘'Issuing mere warnings and threats will never help quell the student unrests. This is not the very first time our schools are burning,'’ Misori said on Wednesday.
He said a more comprehensive policy framework was needed so as to inculcate values in the country's education sector rather than threatening school heads and teachers with notice of dismissal.
‘'We urgently need to address the real problems in our schools because these behaviours of the students reflect the conduct of the entire Kenyan society. We need to conduct an assessment of the interests of the various political classes in our schools, the role of school sponsors and the entire boards of managements and not issuing threats,” he added.
