Eleven people, among them a KCPE candidate, were arraigned before Keroka resident magistrate Njoki Kahara on Friday charged with exam cheating.
The court heard that the pupil, 14, a student at St Andrews Kaggwa Boys Primary School in Nyamira County had a pre-marked English exam answer sheet on Tuesday.
According to the Star, the pupil, was charged with copying an exam contrary to Section 32 (e) of the Kenya National Examination Council Act 29 of 2012, Chapter 225.
He denied the charges and was released on Sh100,000 bond and Sh50,000 bail.
The other 10, among them a head teacher, an exam supervisor and invigilators, faced separate charges of aiding and abetting the pupil to copy the paper, contrary to Section 40 of the Kenya National Examination Council Act 29 of 2012, Chapter 225, and another conspiracy to commit a felony contrary to Section 393 of the Penal Code.
They too denied the charges and were each released on Sh300,00 bond with a similar surety, and Sh100,000 bail.
They are head teacher Joseph Nyachieo, supervisor Caren Nyakeriga and invigilators Agnes Machini, Caren Okenyuri, Diana Nyanchoka, Gladys Aruga, James Atuti, James Onsese, Joyce Mirera and Risper Omae.
Their lawyer Okong’o Omogeni asked the court to release them on reasonable bail, saying they are teachers, hence not a flight risk.
“They have cooperated with investigating officers. They are law-abiding citizens whose salary scale is around Sh25,000. I pray the court sets favourable conditions for bonds and cash bails,” Omogeni said.
The resident magistrate set November 17 as the date for the mention of the case and April 3, 2017 for the hearing.
