Teachers in Nakuru have raised concerns over the lack of running water, saying that if such a situation continues there might be soon be an outbreak of disease in schools
Milimani Primary school head teacher Martin Anyanga said that the current water shortage in the area was worrying and might affect students. He said that they relied on rain water after their water was disconnected, unable to pay for heavy water bills.
“The school needs a lot of water for cleaning up but our taps are dry. We have to rely on rain water and currently it has not rained in a long time. We currently have a water bill of more than Sh90,000 which is worrying,” Anyanga added
According to Samson Okongo of Mama Ngina Primary school the lack of water in their heavily populated schools was a cause for concern.
“This will affect the toilets in the schools as they need to be cleaned often. If neglected even for a short time, we might end up dealing with serious health repercussions,” Okongo said.
Nakuru county health CEC Samuel Mwaura admitted that there was a problem
“We are still trying to look into ways which we can provide water for the schools. This will help us avoid disasters related to water based diseases,” Mwaura said.
