Teachers in Kisumu have termed suggestions by the national assembly majority leader Aden Duale to devolve education as a tactic to derail their resolve to have a pay rise. Kisumu County Kenya Union of Post Primary Education chairman Zablon Awange said devolving education talk is meant to distract the attention of teachers from the strike. “We teachers, we are very clear on what we want and no amount of intimidation through withholding our salary or bringing the talk of devolving education will overcome us," he said Awange said the constitution is very clear on education and told Duale that devolving education will marginalise other areas in the country. He asked the government to intensify dialogue with the two teachers’ unions to find a solution to the stalemate. “Let the government be sincere and address our concerns and stop these threats," he said. Speaking in Kisumu, Awange threatened that the union will pull out their members from insecure counties across the country. He warned principals still holding students in schools to release them and wait for the outcome of the ongoing negotiations. “Principals still holding students in schools let you be warned that we are coming to flush you out. Strike is on and every teacher and students should be at home and wait for the outcome," he said. Awange noted that they will ensure that no student or teacher is seen in any school within the county.
