The teachers stated that the new school principal had introduced a new compulsory tuition schedule that was repressing them. They also said that these changes were in violation of the teachers’ statute agreement.

Speaking on Wednesday during an education day in Kisiiki Primary School, the KNUT secretary Michael Kasimba Ngui gave a decree to the Yatta district education officer (DEO) Kamau Gicheru to solve the problem in two weeks.

“The teachers of HGM School are being oppressed by the new principal who alleges that they should work from 5am to 10pm at night which is not in order following the teachers’ agreement with their employers. I therefore give the principal of the school, together with the area DEO, fourteen days to solve the problems” said Ngui

Ngui further stated that the new principal was not only oppressing the teachers but that he was breaking the law as tuition in schools had been banned.

Addressing teachers and education officials on a similar occasion in Ndalani, Kamau Gicheru stated that he had not received a formal complaint from the any of the teachers.

“My office has not received a written complaint from the teachers, but I will look into the matter and send education officers to investigate the allegations,” said Kamau

The principal had just been transferred to the school less than a month ago.
