John Njuguna was killed by a stray bullet on Sunday at Thika stadium where he had attended gospel musician Muigai Wa Njoroge album launch.

The teachers, led by Thika Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) secretary general Joe Mungai, said they will call for protests in the town if the officer is not arrested at the expiry of 24 hours.

Speaking at the General Kago funeral home where they identified the body of their colleague, Mungai said that medical reports show that Njuguna, a mathematics teacher at Barracks Primary School in Thika was hit and killed by a stray bullet.

“We are giving police 24 hours to arrest the officer who fired the stray bullet that killed our colleague failure to which we will stage demonstrations across Thika,” Mungai said.

The teachers accused the police of allegedly killing innocent civilians and letting off criminals.

Mungai said that the teacher had attended the event and had a Bible in his pocket an indication that he was not a criminal.

The teachers now want the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet and the Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to intervene over the matter and ensure justice for the slain teacher.

They also want politicians who attended the Sunday event that turned chaotic to join them as they seek justice for their colleague.

On Sunday, two people are said to have been killed after a music album launch event that was attended by several politicians turned chaotic.

According to police, a group youth turned rowdy and started mugging and robbing locals who had attended the music launch.

Speaking to journalists at Thika town on Wednesday, area Sub County Deputy Commissioner Tom Anjere denied claims that police used live bullets leading to the two deaths and injuries.

The DCC said that a complete investigation report will be issued once the probe is completed.
