Teachers in Garissa County have decried the state of poor working conditions.
As the entire nation joined the rest of World in marking the World Teachers’ Day, tutors in this county came out to lament over the poor state of working conditions they are subjected to at their places of work.
According to the tutors in the region, the working conditions are not good yet the government has been underpaying them, further complaining that the salaries often delay.
Addressing teachers during the celebrations, an aspirant for the Garissa woman representative’s seat Fatuma Kinsi pointed out that teachers have raised their concern that they have been overburdened, only to be underpaid at the end of the month.
Kenya Primary Schools Head Teachers Association Garissa branch chairman Huusien Dubat added that the teachers will only have reasons to rejoice when the non local teachers who had left the county after the 2015 Garissa University attack make up their minds to return to work.
He also accused the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Secretary General Wilson Sossion for inciting non local teachers to down their tools after he described the region hostile.
“Teachers are overburdened and the government has done little to improve their conditions of living. As teachers we have nothing to celebrate" he said.
He added: “We will only celebrate with non-local residents who stayed with us (during) the time of need,” he said amidst cheers from teachers.
